Circle of Elders (COE)

Honoring elders has its roots in African traditions and customs.  The practice of setting aside a special time to recognize those who have been pillars of strength to their families and communities has been celebrated by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Sigma Xi Zeta Chapter, Morrisville, North Carolina, since 2003.

The Circle of Elders honors and pays homage to the women who have paved the way for us and led by example.  Over the past twenty-one years, we have honored over two hundred fifty women throughout the community, state, and nation.  We look up to these women and stand on their shoulders.  Their lives serve as models for us to follow.

These are extraordinary women who have taken on numerous roles in our community, including raising multiple generations of their family, serving in their churches, and volunteering in various neighborhoods, schools, hospitals, and assisted living facilities.  Several have excelled as businesswomen, attorneys, educators, social workers, medical professionals, and successful entrepreneurs.  They have worked tirelessly, giving their time, talents, funds, words of comfort, encouragement, and advice.

Our Circle of Elders honorees are seldom recognized; they go about their work quietly, never looking for reward; yet they exemplify the ideals for which we all strive.  We come together during International Women’s History Month and invite their families and communities to join us as we recognize and celebrate these women who exemplify the essence of Finer Womanhood.
